The Baker's Cabinet

It all began with a simple conversation—one maker to another. A local artisan, known for baking beautiful cakes and irresistible treats, mentioned a familiar problem: organization. Boxes and cake boards of every size had slowly taken over a corner of the kitchen, spilling onto the counter and forming a pile that was hard to manage and even harder to take inventory of.

What started as a small idea quickly became a shared project. As a fellow designer and maker, I was excited to help someone whose craft, like mine, is rooted in care, creativity, and serving others. The goal was clear: create a thoughtful, simple solution that fit the space and neatly housed a wide range of box sizes. Careful planning guided the design, keeping function front and center.

Though not intended as a fine furniture piece, the cabinet drew inspiration from an old French café fixture—classic, understated, and honest. The wood was chosen for its ability to age gracefully, developing a rich patina over time, while the hardware echoed the quiet charm of antique file cabinets.

In the end, it was a quick and fun build and a reminder of why I love woodworking. Not every piece needs to be complex to be meaningful. Sometimes, the best projects are the ones that solve a real problem, support another craftsperson, and bring beauty and order to everyday work.
